Assam : SC refuses to extend May 31 deadline for updation of NRC

New Delhi, Mar 28 : The Supreme Court  refused to extend the May 31 deadline for the ongoing process of publication of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam in the wake of panchayat elections in the state, saying the polls should not become an impediment.
 
The top court, however, spared the Additional Deputy Commissioner rank officer currently engaged in NRC updation work for the local bodies elections scheduled next month.

Assam: Class V girl gangraped and set ablaze in Nagaon

Nagaon (Assam) , Mar 24 : One Zakir Hussain and four others raped the Class-V girl when she was alone at home after returning from school last evening, they said. After committing the crime the rapists poured kerosene oil on her and set her ablaze.

Assam : Elephant saved by alert train driver

Dimapur(Nagaland) Mar 24: On March 22 a train from Silghat to Guwahati saved an elephant on the track. The crew members were Kanak Chandra Nath, Loco Pilot (driver); Ravi Ranjan Kumar, Assistant Loco Pilot and Arun Rabha, Guard.
 
A press release issued by the NF Railways Maligaon mentioned that the train left Silghat as per its schedule departure and while entering Jhakla Banda railway station the on duty crew members suddenly noticed a movement of an elephant at km 54/0-1 just about 65 m ahead of the train.

Indian Wildlife Sanctuary sees jump in One-Horned Rhinos; 102 Rhinos spotted

Pobitora (Assam) , Mar 22  :A tiny wildlife sanctuary in northeastern India has reported a jump in the number of one-horned rhinoceroses.
 
All of the world's five rhino species are under threat from poachers who sell their horns on black markets, often in countries where rhino horn is believed to increase male potency.
 A total of 102 rhinos have been counted in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary here during a census carried out by the state's forest department, a senior official said on Sunday.
 

Assam : Shyama Prasad's statue vandalised

Kokrajhar (Assam), Mar 14: The wave of statue vandalisation across the country, seems to have reached the state  . In a bizzare incident ,the statue of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was   vandalised at Rabindra Nagar  in Kokrajhar town late last night.
 
The incident took place on Tuesday night in Kokrajhar town by some unknown  miscreants.
 
Police rushed to the  spot and  investigations are on. However no  arrests have been made so   far .
 

Assam :Finance Minister Himanta To Present State's First E-Budget Today

Guwahati (Assam), March 12 :  Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma  said he would present the state's first e-Budget at the legislative Assembly on Monday.
 
"The government will present the first e-Budget in the Assembly and each legislator will be provided with a tablet (computer) with details of the Budget," Mr Sarma told reporters here.
 
The legislators will be able to access the tablets during discussions and cut motion on the Budget inside the House, he said.
 

Papon issued notice by the NCPCR for kissing a minor girl

New Delhi , Feb 24 :The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) on Friday (23 February) issued notice to both the singer Papon and the channel &TV after a video emerged of the singer inappropriately kissing a minor girl, an official said.
 
"We have seen the video and have gone through the written complaint which came to us from Supreme Court lawyer Runa Bhuyan. We felt this is a provocative case. Necessary legal action will be taken," the official added.
 

Assam : Couple commits suicide after celebrating Valentine's Day

Goalpara(Assam ), Feb 15 :   After celebrating Valentine’s Day, a couple committed suicide in Assam's Goalpara district here .
The young  couple committed suicide by jumping in front of a speeding train early on Thursday  as their families were opposed to their marriage, police said.
 
 
The victims have been identified as 26-year-old Biswajit Nath and Helen Nath, 21. The incident took place between 2:30am and 3:00am at Dudhnoi, 115km west from the state capital.
