Assam: Supreme Court directs Assam to pay Tea Staff Dues

New Delhi , April 5 : The Supreme Court has directed the Central Government to proceed against defaulting tea companies by calling the statutory authorities to issue notices to the companies, for recovery and payment of wages to the workmen, who lost their source of revenue due to closure of tea estates majorly in the states of Assam, West Bengal, Kerala & Tamil Nadu.

Assam : High Court to set up Fast Track Courts in each district

Guwahati(Assam),April 4: In consideration of Assam  Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s letter, , urging  the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court to consider setting up of Fast Track Courts for day to day trial of cases of rape and murder of children and women for early disposal and punishment of culprits, the Gauhati High Court had already resolved to approve the proposal for setting up of exclusive Fast Track Courts for day to day trial of such cases.

Goa, April 3 : Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has been elected as the President of the Badminton Association of India during the federation’s annual general body meeting and election in Goa today. Dr. Sarma, is Cabinet ranked Minister and convener of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA, he took over as the interim President of BAI last year after the demise of former President late .Dr Akhilesh Das Gupta and was elected to the hot seat unopposed. He will now serve as the President of the Association for a term of four years.

Jet Airways To Increase Weekly Flights From North East

Guwahati (Assam), April 03 : Jet Airways has said it would expand presence in the North East, increasing the number of weekly flights between the region and the rest of the country.
The initiative forms a part of the airline's strategy to further strengthen the domestic footprint in 45 cities of India, complementing its three hubs at Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru, CEO Vinay Dube said.

Assam launches toll free womens helpline

Guwahati(Assam) Mar 30 : The Assam hovernment today launched a womens helpline to tackle the recent spurt in crime in the state.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched the 181-Sakhi toll free women helpline at a programme held in Janata Bhawan .
The service is presently being launched for one shift and will be open from 9 am to 5 pm and made available round-the-clock shortly, official sources said.

Rapists must be shot dead in public: BJP MP, R.P Sharma

Guwahati (Assam) , Mar 29 : Raising concern over the increasing number of rape incidents in Assam, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Tezpur R.P. Sharma on Wednesday said people found guilty of committing such horrendous crime should be shot dead in public.
 BJP MP said that capital punishment is the only way to deal with people disrespecting women.
"Those who commit heinous crimes like rape must be shot in public; this is the only way to stop these incidents," Sharma told ANI.

Assam : SC refuses to extend May 31 deadline for updation of NRC

New Delhi, Mar 28 : The Supreme Court  refused to extend the May 31 deadline for the ongoing process of publication of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam in the wake of panchayat elections in the state, saying the polls should not become an impediment.
The top court, however, spared the Additional Deputy Commissioner rank officer currently engaged in NRC updation work for the local bodies elections scheduled next month.

Nagaon (Assam) , Mar 24 : One Zakir Hussain and four others raped the Class-V girl when she was alone at home after returning from school last evening, they said. After committing the crime the rapists poured kerosene oil on her and set her ablaze.

Assam : Elephant saved by alert train driver

Dimapur(Nagaland) Mar 24: On March 22 a train from Silghat to Guwahati saved an elephant on the track. The crew members were Kanak Chandra Nath, Loco Pilot (driver); Ravi Ranjan Kumar, Assistant Loco Pilot and Arun Rabha, Guard.
A press release issued by the NF Railways Maligaon mentioned that the train left Silghat as per its schedule departure and while entering Jhakla Banda railway station the on duty crew members suddenly noticed a movement of an elephant at km 54/0-1 just about 65 m ahead of the train.
