Kokrajhar (Assam) ,Sept 25: Seeking to save of democracy and conduct early general elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council(BTC) within October next, the Bodoland People’s Front(BPF) carried out a protest in Kokrajhar on Friday .

Hundreds of party leader and members with banners, placards participated in the rally amidst heavy rains in the area.

BPF president Hagrama submitted a memorandum to the chief minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal through Kokrajhar deputy commissioner Bhaskar Phukan seeking early conduct of BTC elections by maintaining Covid-19 protocols in the BTAD region.

Mohilary, who is the former BTC chief demanded that elections should be conducted within the month of October for paving the way healthy democracy and welfare of the common masses in the region.

He also flayed the government and election commission ,stating that the state government has been tactically delaying the council elections in the BTAD region and the citizens from the region are being deprived of their democratic rights. He said that his party would stage agitations for early conduct of council elections within October next .

Mohilary while reacting to the declaration of Bihar assembly election dates said, ” If Bihar assembly election dates can be declared by election commission, parliament Sessions , Assam assembly sessions can be held amidst COVID-19 Pandemic across the country then why not BTC council elections”.

Mohilary while announcing more aggressive protests in support of demanding BTC election said that BPF will be organizing a women’s rally in Chirang on Monday for pressing the government for early conduct of BTC council elections.

Further he said that BPF is going to hold hunger strike with slogans like Do or die and live and let live seeking early conduct of BTC elections in BTAD .

He also warned that BPF will continue with its protests until till BTC council elections are held within October this year .

He said that Governor’s Rule imposed in the BTAD should not be extended in BTAD as citizens are totally deprived of development and welfare activities post Governor’s Rule imposed since April 28 last.

He said that COVID-19 pandemic cannot be a factor for delaying BTC council elections at any cost since the state government has opened all markets ,bazars ,transport during the ongoing COVID pandemic .

Mohilary while reacting on Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s remarks, said that Dr .Himanta Sarma is not the authority of Election Commission and he is not authorized to make such remarks on holding of BTC council elections.

On renaming of BTC as BTR, Mohilary said that BPF will take up the issue legally in the court of law .
He said that the implementation of BTR accord and renaming of BTR in place of BTC was unfortunate and is not acceptable.

” Renaming of BTR in place of existing BTC, is violation of model code of conduct in the BTC. BPF is taking legal steps “, Mohilary said.

Lastly , Mohilary accused the state government of conspiring over the BTC council elections as BPF is fully prepared for the council elections and would win majority of the seats .
