Ampati(Meghalaya), July 30: Two persons, including a 5 year old and his father were killed today after the scooty they were traveling in, hit an oncoming stone dumper near the town of Ampati in South West Garo Hills (SWGH).
As per reports, the incident took place at about 7 AM this morning, Jul 30 with the victims being identified as Tengabil M Marak (39) and his youngest son, Bilkam R Marak. The victims were apparently going towards the Ampati Civil Hospital when the tragedy took place.
As per witnesses, the father – son duo, who are residents of Ampati Bolsalgre, had gone to buy groceries and it was while returning that their vehicle was hit by the dumper truck. The dumper was carrying stones meant for export into neighbouring Bangladesh.
Witnesses added that the vehicle that hit the father and son had veered off the road and hit the scooter, leading to the immediate death of the two victims as they were run over.
“It could be a human error (sleepiness) or a mechanical one but the vehicle, which was going towards Ampati went off road and hit the scooty leading to the death of the two persons. The driver of the vehicle has been arrested. An investigation into the matter is currently on,” said superintendent of police, SWGH, Siddharth Ambedkar.
The driver of the dumper, ran from the spot after the incident, but was later caught by villagers and handed over to the Ampati PS for action.
