Shillong(Meghalaya), Aug 16: Rift has surfaced in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) over the post of Speaker in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Both UDP and NPP are staking claim to the post which fell vacant after the death of incumbent Dr. Donkupar Roy of UDP on July 28.
While NPP wanted the matter to be decided by all allies of MDA, the UDP has however made it clear that the post of Speaker in the Assembly should go to the party.
Upping it ante on the issue, a delegation of UDP leaders led by interim party president, Bindo M. Lanong yesterday evening met Sangma at his residence here to discuss on the issue.
The UDP delegation impressed upon the chief minister that the Speaker’s post should remain with the party.
The delegation also urged Sangma that all allies of Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) should support the candidate of the UDP in the by-election to the Shella Assembly constituency.
Meanwhile, Sangma today said that the decision on the Speaker’s post will have to be decided by all the partners in the MDA.
“When it comes to the Speaker’s post, it cannot be an individual decision,” Sangma told media persons here .
“The MDA as a group will take a consensus decision on the Speaker’s post,” Sangma said adding that the meeting of the MDA will be held sometime next week to discuss on the issue.
On the request by UDP for support by all MDA partners to the party candidate for the Shella by-election, Sangma said that the decision will have to be taken jointly by all the allies of MDA.
