Shillong (Meghalaya ), Nov 8 : Right to Information (RTI) activist Agnes Kharshiing of Shillong-based ,Civil Society Women’s Organisation(CSWO) was allegedly attacked by coal mafias in Tuber Sohshrieh in East Jaintia Hills district on Thursday afternoon .
According reports, Kharshiing is stated to be in a critical condition with serious injuries on her head . After the attack she was rushed to Lalong Civil Hospital, but later shifted to NEIGRIHMS hospital here for specalised treatment .
The incident took place a day after she filed a complaint against coal-laden trucks parked at Mawiong rim in Shillong , which were later seized by the police.
Kharshiing has been raising her voice against mining activities in the state since the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ban and was instrumental in exposing rampant mining and transportation of coal despite the ban across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
According to police sources, Kharshiing had gone to Tuber to follow up on the Nov 7 incident at Mawiong rim. She along with another member, A Sangma were attacked, dragged and left in a jungle. While Sangma managed to crawl her way to the road and sought for help Kharshiing was later rescued from the jungle in an unconscious state .
Surprisingly , the driver who drove them to Jaintia Hills which is around 120 kms from here was not attacked and was asked to leave the area.
According to information available , this morning prior to her departure to Tuber, a person came over to her residence and reportedly offered her money to withdraw the case. She declined the offer and instead rushed to Tuber , where she was attacked by the coal mafias .
Police have registered a case and are questioning the driver who was a prime witness .
