Guwahati (Assam) , Nov 1 : At least five persons were killed and many were injured when suspected ULFA (I) militants opened fire at Kherbari village in Assam’s Tinsukia district at 8 pm on Thursday.
According to sources ,six persons of a particular community, were reportedly sitting in a shop, near Sadiya town when the militants picked them up and took them to the banks of the Brahmaputra river. The militants then lined them up and shot them one by one. One of them managed to give a slip and escape , reports our Correspondent .
According to police, the incident took place at around 8 pm, around 6 km away from the Dhola-Sadiya bridge. A group five suspected militants came in a bike with sophisticated arms including AK- 81 rifles and left the place unchallenged after the crime.
ULFA-I is yet to claim responsibility of the killing.
Following the gun firing, army and police have been rushed to the spot. Top officials including DGP Kula Saikia and ADGP Mukesh Agarwalla have rushed to the area .
Those killed have been identified as Shyamlal Biswas, Ananta Biswas , Arvind Biswas (all from the same family) , Subal Das and Dhananjoy Namasudra.
Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal strongly condemned the killings, and asked two of his senior ministers to immediately proceed to the incident site to take stock of the situation.
