Imphal (Manipur) , Oct 10 : The Manipur University was once again virtually turned into a war field with a huge number of Manipur police force being deployed to suppress the students protest inside the University complex.
Around 20 student agitators were reported to have been picked up by the police after conducting raids at the Boys Hostel of the University. Identities of those picked up could not be confirmed.
Students from various departments of the University today staged a protest in front of their respective departments demanding immediate and unconditional release of the faculty members and the students who were arrested by the police on the midnight of September 20 from the university complex.
Manipuri language department of the University today shut down demanding justice and speedy completion of the ongoing inquiry against VC Prof. AP Pandey.
Similar protests were also staged at other departments, too. Around noon a large number of students marched towards the administrative block demanding immediate and unconditional release of the arrested teachers and students.
When the students reached the A-Block a team of state security force who were already present tried to stop the students at the gate. The irate students confronted the police team for a while. The police to control the situation resorted to lathi charge and fired smoke bombs to disperse the students. It is learnt that some of the agitators were injured in the police action.
After the news spread about police excess a large number of students thronged to the University but police closed the gate and prevented them from entering the complex.
Later , the police team raided the boy’s hostel of the University and the students from the hostel were paraded in front of the hostel for verification of the culprits .
This is the second time that the hostel has been raided in connection with the ongoing agitation. The first raid was on September 20 midnight .
