Kokrajhar (Assam) , Oct 9: Dozens of social and student’s unions of the Bodo community have jointly initiated to voice against gambling and anti-social elements during the ensuing puja season in the district.
A delegation from eight organizations of social and student bodies jointly submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Kokrajhar today urging not to give permission to puja and mela committees to allow gambling and selling of wine in the district. The organizations, included Kokrajhar district Boro Samaj, Kokrajhar district All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), National Democratic Front of Boroland-progressive ( NDFB-P), Kokrajhar district ex-BLT welfare society, Kokrajhar district Bodoland Students Union(BSU), Kokrajhar district Gaonburah Association, Kokrajhar district committee of Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Kokrajhar district committee of Bodo Cultural Association and Kokrajhar district unit of All Bodo Women’s Welfare Federation(ABWWF).
They urged the district administration to take stern action against the anti social elements who indulge in gambling and illegal sale of alcohol in the name of puja celebrations.
The organization have earnestly appealed to the Deputy commissioner to ensure no gambling and illegal selling of alcoholic beverages are allowed by the organisers of various puja committees in the greater interest of the future generation and society as a whole.
Kokrajhar, Deputy Commissioner Niranajan Baruah lauded the initiatives by several organizations towards building a society free from gambling and anti-social activities during puja celebrations. He said that puja pandals would be monitored strictly to maintain peace and integrity.
‘ Each and every puja pandal have been instructed to install CCTV at the puja complex’, he said
