Manipur: One arrested on charges of Poisoning Birds

Imphal (Manipur ) , Sept 29 : A man has been arrested in Kwasiphai Maning Leikai area here for poisoning birds . According to information available the the man had poisoned around 20 to 30 migratory birds by using insecticides .

Reason : He had used the insecticides to protect his harvests from insects and had applied the poisons to protect the “American peas” that he had cultivated in his paddy field.

The arrested person has been identified as 52 -year old Khundrakpam Nabachandra Singh.He told the police that he had applied the poisons to protect the “American peas” that he had cultivated in his paddy field.

Police after spot investigation found dead birds hanging on sticks which were used to scare the other birds and it became clear that his intentions was to kill the birds.

The Manipur Forest and Environment minister, Th. Shyamkumar appealed to the people of the State to be kind and protective towards wildlife and the environment. This incident of bird killing using poisonous insecticides too was highly condemned by the minister.

Singh will be produced before the court for his offence and If proved guilty, will be convicted under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 for which he can be imprisoned for a term extending up to three years or with fine which may extend to Rs 25,000 or with both.
