Imphal(Manipur) , Sept 21 :As many as 89 students and five professors of Manipur University were arrested by Manipur Police in a pre-dawn operation conducted in the varsity campus following disruption semester examinations in the varsity on Thursday because of sudden outbreak of fresh agitation by students who had resisted the newly-appointed Pro- Vice Chancellor and Registrar to assume office.
The University was non functional till recently for a prolonged agitation since May 30 by students and staffs demanding ouster of the Vice-Chancellors Professor A P Pandey.
The academic atmosphere in the varsity was once again disrupted and came to a halt on Thursday when Professor K. Yugindro of Physics Department chosen as Pro-Vice Chancellor by the Vice-Chancellor, A P Pandey and deputed Registrar Professor M. Shyamkesho of Life Sciences Department, went on to resume their office on Thursday at the university.
News agency , IANS ,quoted Inspectors General of Police S. Kailun and Clay Khongsai saying that the police entered the campus right after midnight on the basis of a complaint by Vice Chancellor in-charge K. Yugindro saying that on Thursday he was prevented from taking charge.
As per the IANS report ,The police action triggered massive protests by the students leading to scuffles that prompted the police to fire several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
Amar Yunan, a professor, said some students sustained injuries and were bleeding.
Manipur University has been gripped by unrest for the last three months or so as students and teachers demanded the removal of Vice Chancellor A.P. Pandey.
The report added that the university was shut for 85 days. Normalcy returned earlier in September when a fact-finding committee was set up to look into the charges against Pandey, who has been accused of being involved in financial and administrative irregularities.
Pandey, who has denied the charges, was suspended on September 17.

Internet services have been suspended in Manipur for the next five days.
