Shillong ( Meghalaya ) , Aug 31 : Gone are the days of couples just deciding to stay together without any formal marriage in the state . Now its a must to furnish marriage registration certificates by married couples for all official purposes.
The state government has issued strict instructions to all government departments to see that every individul submits the certificates for all official purposes.
“The government has made it mandatory for married men and women to furnish marriage certificates for all official purposes as notified under the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012,” according to official statement .
Social activist, Micheal Syiem had spearheaded a movement for compulsory registration of marriages in the state and had submitted a representation to the chief minister seeking immediate implementation of the said Act after the cabinet approval way back in 2015
Syiem is of the opinion that compulsory registration of marriages would solve the increasing number of broken families and the associated social problems .
‘There has been numerous cases of women being unceremoniously left by their husbands and there was no law to compel the husbands to provide maintenance cost to the wives and their children.’,said Syiem.
