India- Myanmar Border : Towards a drugs free Moreh, now stern action against Drug- Smugglers

Moreh ( India -Myanmar Border) ,Aug 29 : Located along Indo – Myanmar border is Moreh which falls under Tengnoupal district of the state . The town is mainly inhabited by Kukis, Tamils, Nepalis , Meiteis, Punjabis, Telugu, Marwari and Muslim Pangals. The Town has a population of 16,847 people of which 8,670 are males while 8,177 are females as per report released by Census department .

This tiny border town has of late has become very famous for all wrong reasons and has become the major transit point for all nefarious activities .You name it from smuggling of animal body parts to gold and drugs and has turned into a haven for drug smugglers.

Various perishable goods , from vegetables to bulky goods, are imported from Myanmar’s main commercial market Namphalong on a daily basis . Along with these goods drugs of various kinds are smuggled into the state . Infact , smuggling of Drugs are increasing day by day in this border town.

The deployment of heavy security forces and intelligence agencies at Moreh town have not helped much in reducing the illegal drug trade. On a daily basis, drug peddlers are apprehended either by Assam Rifle at Khudengthabi Check Post or by Moreh Police.

But the number of drug peddlers are increasing day by day .Moreh now has become the main point from where Chinese drugs like WY are imported through Myanmar to India.

Majority of the youngsters and students in the border town including women are now addicted to drugs .

On seeing such an increase in the number of drug addicts , The Hills Tribal Council has launched an intensive an Anti Drug abuse campaign to find out the root of drug business and make Moreh Town free from drugs .
Thel convenor of Anti Drugs Abuse Campaign Committee, Khup Gangte stated that the Committee is going to take firm action to eliminate drug smuggling in the Indo-Myanmar Border Town.

He said that the Committee will conduct drive against drugs peddlers, drugs users in the town from September 1 st next .

The organisation warned the drugs peddlers to stop peddling immediately otherwise strict action would be taken against them during the drive starting from Saturday . All the public leaders of various organisations have promised to provide full support to team and would send theirs volunteers to assist the Committee make the entire town drugs free .
