Imphal (Manipur) ,Aug 18 : Anti Smuggling Unit of Custom Division, Imphal seized over Rs. 1.6 crore worth gold bars from 5 persons while they were trying to smuggle them out from the Koirengei area here.
The arrested smugglers were from Maharashtra and have been identified as Sanjoy Kumar Krishnani ,Umesh Laxmandas Darda, Jayram Ram Prabatti Manglani , Harish Nanikram Shringi and Dilip Kumar Laljani
The smugglers were arrested from a Dimapur bound Tata Winger Passenger Vehicle from Koirengei Check post . Gold pieces in rectangular form (fine gold 999.9 foriegn origin.) were found hidden in the shoes and bags and in body cavity (rectum) .The gold pieces were to be smuggled from imphal to Dimapur and further to Mumbai by train according to official sources .
In a seperate incident, Assam Rifles seized 1.3 Kgs of Brown Sugar and 1,30,000 numbers of WY tablets costing about Rs. 12 crores from village L Youjang, Moreh along India -Manipur border Acting on specific inputs from Directorate of Revenue Intelligence Imphal about presence of contraband in a house at village LY oujang, a team of Moreh Battalion launched a massive search operation in the area and located the house.
The owner of the house , Thangminlen Haokip was missing from in the house during the raid . On thorough checking of the house, the search team found 1.3 Kg of Brown Sugar and 1,30,000 numbers of WY tablets weighing around 12.5 Kgs.
The approximate market value of the seized items is Rs 12 crores. Recovered items were handed over to DRI Imphal. Assam Rifles has been actively involved in making Manipur a drugs free State. Since March this year , Assam Rifles has seized drugs worth Rs. 65 crores approximately from Tengnoupal District in the state.
