Kokrajhar (Assam),Aug 6:Rail communication in the state was disrupted in north bank of Brahmaputra because of the rail-roko agitation resorted to by a local ethnic community demanding Scheduled Tribes (ST) status.
According to official sources the Guwahati-New Delhi Rajdhani Express and Guwahati-Bangalore Express, through South Bank of Brahmaputra along the route Fakiragram-Golakganj-New Cooch Behar, had to be diverted . a total of Eight other trains were cancelled,
Protestors from All Assam Koch-Rajbongshi Sanmilani and AKRSU sat on the railway track at Chatuara station in Gossaigaon in Western Assam since 6 am to press for their long-standing demand for ST status to Koch-Rajbongshi community and creation of Kamatapur state.
Police have so far arrested 18 protestors .
The blockade was peaceful till the noon, but later turned violent when protestors started pelting stones on the security forces deployed on the track.
Police had to lathicharge and later resorted to bursting of tear gas to disperse the protestors from the rail tracks.
At Least five vehicles belonging to media were damaged following stone pelting from the protestors.
At least twelve persons,including five policemen received serious injuries in the lathicharge and stone pelting and rushed to Gossaigaon hospital.
Superintendent of Police, Kokrajhar Rajen Singh told South Asia Views that police had to resort to lathicharge and fire tear gas to disperse the protestors from the rail tracks.
General Secretary of AKRSU Gokul Barman slammed the BJP led NDA government for not initiating any steps to solve the demand and issues of the Koch Rajbongshi community
