Kokrajhar (Assam): The National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-S) has met with a great blow after dreaded self style sergeant major Soheton Narzary alias Sandaw was killed in an encounter on Wednesday night at Saraibill Dhumbazar area in Kokrajhar district, said Rajen Singh, Superintendent of Police, Kokrajhar.
An AK 56 rifle, a country made gun, two grenades, three magazines, cash amounting to Rs 10,000,16 empty cases,over 219 live ammunitions,one detonator and a Khukri was recovered after killing him.
Soheton, a sergeant major and an active cadre of the NDFB-S was killed late last night during an encounter with police during a joint search operation along the Dhumbazar area in which a heavy exchange of firing took place between security forces and the militants .
Acting on specific inputs about movement of NDFB-S cadres in the area, two ambush parties of Kokrajhar Police took position in Dhumbazar and Oxiguri under Gossaigaon PS last night . At about 8:15 PM, three militants appeared in Dhumbazar from the forest area in the north. As the militants were passing through the village, the ambush party challenged the militants. On being challenged, the militants opened indiscriminate firing on the ambush party as a result of which two commandos received bullet injuries . However, the ambush party immediately fired back on the heavily armed militants.
The heavy exchange of fire lasted for 15to 20 minutes . Subsequenty a search was carried out out and a heavily armed militant was found killed who was later identified as Soheton Narzary one of the most dreaded NDFB (S) militant leaders of Kokrajhar district. Two other militants managed to escape despite one of them ,Martyars Narzary receiving serious injuries .
SP Kokrajhar said that Sandaw was a dreaded commander and a cadre of the 39th batch of the NDFB-S . He has been creating a reign of terror among the people as well as police in the past few months by carrying out extortions and kidnappings . He said that Sandaw’s killing is big blow for the militant outfit . ” Around 10 armed cadres are still active in the region” , he added.
